When it comes to dentistry, fluoride seems to be something that’s everywhere. You can receive a specific treatment that contains it or use a toothpaste that includes it as an ingredient. However, as prevalent as it may be, there are several myths that surround it. They can make you hesitant to get this mineral and reap the benefits it has for your oral health, so here’s the truth behind three misconceptions.

1.)  Fluoride Can Discolor Your Teeth

Many people believe fluoride can discolor teeth, causing white or brown spots over time. While this isn’t entirely baseless, there is more to why this can happen. What those who are worried about is called dental fluorosis. In short, this is an overexposure to this mineral when they were younger.

However, you can only get this condition if you are eight years old or younger, as grins are still developing then. That means older children, teens, and adults have nothing to worry about! If you do have it, then you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that it’s rare and only cosmetic. So, your teeth’s health isn’t impacted and will function just like normal.

2.)  Fluoride Isn’t Safe for Your Smile

Going off the point above, you may now think that fluoride is unsafe for those with a developing smile. Although it is possible for kids to be overexposed to it, there are decades of research that help prevent it.

The levels of this mineral in local water supplies, toothpaste, and other products have all been adjusted to account for one another. That way, children can still benefit from it without developing dental fluorosis. If you have a little one, then be sure to keep using things as directed.

3.)  Fluoride Doesn’t Help with Decay

While you might hear fluoride has benefits, you might wonder what exactly it does. It helps remineralize your enamel. Bacteria can erode your grin with the acids they produce when they eat sugar. Over time, this can increase your risk of cavities, but this layer of your teeth can’t repair itself. However, by putting this mineral on it, you can help it be sturdier against plaque in your mouth. That way, you can avoid cavities.

In the end, there are many myths about fluoride, but you should know the facts. It can be a great thing for your oral health, so learn the truth to feel confident knowing you’re only benefiting your smile.
